FLEAS
Aside from the annoying itch caused by biting and crawling fleas – tiny insects that will gladly take up
residence in a pet owners’ own bedding or carpet – health concerns such as tapeworms can also
be attributed to these little bugs.
Fleas are an intermediate host for tapeworms. The cycle begins
when – during grooming or biting -
a pet ingests a flea carrying tapeworms. The tapeworm matures within the pet, and as an adult releases mature, egg-filled segments. The pet passes egg-filled tapeworm segments in its feces, and the segments rupture, releasing eggs that are eaten by flea larvae. When the fleas mature and select a pet “host,” the cycle begins anew. Skin irritation and allergies are also common side-effects of flea infestation. Fleas are most prevalent during warmer months,
but in some climates may be present year-round.
Pest deterrent is the best method to combat fleas, but it is important to note that effectively eliminating fleas means eliminating the insect at all life stages. Simply getting rid of adult fleas will not have the same lasting effect as also killing flea eggs and larvae.
TICKS
Whether the size of a pinhead or a dime, ticks are
bothersome pests that should not be ignored. Beyond
leaving bites that may become infected, ticks transmit diseases, including Lyme disease. Although there are about 200 species of ticks, black-legged ticks (also called deer ticks) are most commonly associated with Lyme disease.
The bacteria that causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) normally lives in small animals such as mice and squirrels, and is transmitted to domestic animals and humans through tick bites. Animals that have contracted Lyme disease may exhibit symptoms such as pain, lameness, fever and lymph node swelling in the affected limb. If left untreated, the disease can be fatal.
Consistent pest management and promptly removing any
ticks that do appear are keys to minimizing the risk of tick-borne illness.
However, pet owners should exercise special caution when removing ticks, or seek assistance from a qualified veterinarian. Improperly removing a tick may leave its head imbedded, increasing irritation and the potential for infection.
MOSQUITOS
While mosquito bites are aggravating to
humans, they can pose much more serious health threats to dogs and cats.
That’s because mosquitoes transmit heartworms, a dangerous and potentially
life-threatening disease. Just one bite
from an infected mosquito is all it
takes to transmit heartworms, and
even indoor pets are at risk from
the tiny female mosquitoes that
can slip through cracks around doors, windows and screens.
A veterinarian-administered exam is the only way to know for sure whether your pet has contracted heartworms. Once you confirm a clean bill of health, it’s important to keep your pet on a
preventive program, including
ongoing pest control.
Mosquitoes are also known vectors of West Nile virus. Although more common in humans and horses, the disease also can infect dogs and cats, resulting in swelling of the brain and other life-threatening symptoms.
Risk from mosquito-borne illness is highest during the warmer spring and summer months, but depending on your location and climate, mosquitoes may be present year-round.

The “pets as people” trend isn’t fading: U.S. pet owners are making provisions for pets in their wills, taking care of pets’ medical needs before their own and planning vacations around the comfort and safety of their four-legged friends. That’s according to long-awaited results from the 2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey by the American Pet Products Association (Greenwich, Conn.).
More than three-quarters of dog, cat, bird, small-animal and equine owners appreciate the companionship, love and company their pets offer. Dogs and cats are likely to be considered members of the family, according to survey results.
“Two decades of trended data show that now, more than ever, people consider pets an important part of the family and are still providing for their faithful companions even in these trying times,” said Bob Vetere, president of APPA. “As pet ownership continues to rise, so has the demand for quality products and services. This has led to an amazing evolution of innovative products and services that truly enhance the experience of owning a pet.”
The APPA survey, frequently quoted in all forms of media, tracks the demographics, buying habits and traits of pet owners in the United States. Here are some key trends from the survey:
- Provisions in wills. Seven percent of survey respondents indicated that they had made financial provisions for their pets in their wills. One in three dog, cat and bird owners and almost half of equine owners have named a caretaker or guardian for their pet in their will.
- Pet health. Dogs visited the veterinarian 2.8 times per year, up 8 percent since 2006, while cat visits remained unchanged at 2.1 visits. Birds went to the veterinarian only two times per year, down 33 percent from three visits in 2006.
If faced with the choice between a large medical expense for themselves and their pet, 15 percent of dog owners said they would attend to their dog’s need before their own. Thirteen percent of cat owners would do the same.
- Pet travel. Pet owners still prefer family or friends to care for their animals while they are on vacation. However, more are taking their pets with them: 21 percent of dog owners take their pet in the car when they travel. These owners take their dogs on an average of five car trips per year. Cat owners bring their feline friends on three car trips per year.
In addition, the 2009-2010 survey for the first time compiled data on pets in the workplace. Three percent took their dog to work—and they averaged 17 canine office visits in the preceding 12 months.

To decide what size crate to buy you should consider your needs. There are so many different sizes and styles of crates for dogs. The size of the crate depends on the growth size of your dog. As some of the crates are not cheap, the crate should serve you for a long period.
One more thing, if you have a large dog, imagine how big its crate should be and what space of your home will take. There are also different styles and types dog crates so you can choose the proper crate where your dog will be comfortable and which will fit to your home.
You obviously know why you need a dog crate; how and where you will use it. There are two main types of dog crates- the first ones are like cages with metal bars and frames while the second are like pet carriers, soft-sided and lighter weight. Also depending on what material they are made of, some are heavier, other have handles on top. If you are going to use the crate as a carrier, the weight is very important as there are some limitations when you travel by planes. You should choose the best dog crate for you to fit your needs and the purpose of its usage.
All Pet Supply USA proudly distributes the full line of Blue Dog Pet Product’s hard and soft dog crates. All crates are durable, easy to assemble, and dog friendly.
Also you should know how many crates you will need. Some of the crates are stackable, which means the largest can be placed on the bottom and the smallest on the top. This is very useful if you have more dogs and a little floor space. If you place the crates one on top of the others instead of side-by-side on the floor which takes a lot of free space , the area will be very small . The best place is one of the corners of the room.
With the weight limitations and all the dimensions of the crates which you should know in advance and the tips above , you are ready to make to smartest decision what crate to purchase.
